Sorrento, Art Hotel Gran Paradiso
From 31th of March 2012 till 31 october 2012
The Art Hotel Gran Paradiso in Sorrento is pleased to invite you to the opening of the new season’s artistic and hotel activities. With this new attempt at redefining its identity, the Art Hotel Gran Paradiso leaves the realm of stereotypical touristic predefinitions by offering the spaces of the family run hotel as a location dedicated to a broader reflection on the role that only entrepreneurs, as modern day Patrons to the arts, can play in the revival of the art system during a period of crisis.
The title 100³: 100 anni, 100 stanze, 100 artisti (100 years, 100 rooms, 100 artists) encompasses the far-sighted ambition of creating a point of reference for art and culture in the Campania region, with an annual appointment that proposes a program of exhibitions and activities, including a direct dialogue between participating visitors and protagonists of the International art world. In fact, at the 2012 edition, the opening will provide the occasion for an unmissable, week-end long exchange between the artists, gallerists and art critics invited to contribute their exceptional vision to the small soo shows installed in each room. In a day that will differ from the usual, a carom of Art, Music and Poetry, with Dionysian muses accompanied by Bacchae, satyrs, wine and delicacies will unfold.
Amongst these, a site-specific installation by Nicola Gobbetto – publically voted winner of last year’s competition who has subsequently dedicated himself to a series of activities that look at the link between artistic production and the spaces in which they are conceived – will be inaugurated. Thus, Stay beautiful! (Sleeping Beauty room), created during the artist’s residence at the hotel, is the first of the artist’s rooms to remain as a permanent installation at the hotel. Here, both ancient and contemporary symbols and codes are used to trace the limits of an aesthetic dimension that goes beyond that of reality, measured according to the relation between natural and artificial, material and spiritual elements that go on to find new intersections.
With the aim of creating new occasions for encounters and exchanges, during the months to come a rich and varied programme of talks, book presentations, concerts and a workshop with Nicola Gobbetto himself will take place, while the introduction of a training project will give students from the Campania region, and especially those frequenting the artistic high school “F. Grandi” in Sorrento, a place in which to interact with the staff and the wide-reaching international public of the hotel.
Setting the scene for these events is Faces, a curatorial project run in collaboration with gallerists and private collectors, which occupies the common spaces of the hotel, presenting a new vision of the portrait in its more unusual forms, moving through centuries of exhibitions. In fact – and as the curator underlines –, given the conception that a contemporary art collection’s nature can only be measured in terms of its actual experience and the personal history in which it is steeped, this project aims to show how «a collection is not only an attempt at creating art history, but also the story of human relationships, a strange geometry of synapses that continually mutate, generating a labyrinth that is nothing else than a diary which recounts the stories of people and lives».
