The Korean Republic Ambassador in Italy, visited Sorrento yesterday, where he was greeted by the Mayor Mr. Giuseppe Cuomo at the Town Hall.
The diplomat was granted his wish to visit some of the important town sites, such as the Sant'Antonino Basilica, where he lingered long admiring the many works of art, the San Francesco Cloisters and the Villa Comunale.
Then they stopped at the Grand hotel Excelsior Vicrtoria, where they visited the suite where Enrico Caruso stayed and where Lucio Dalla composed his famous song dedicated to the tenor. They were hosted by the owner of the property Mr. Guido Fiorentino.
The ambassador explained to the Mayor that Sorrento is very popular in Korea, thanks to the many songs dedicated to the costal town, and that many are the Koreans who come to visit the Town of Tasso.
The mayor also expressed the possibility of twinning Sorrento with a Town of this nation, which is the third largest economy of Asia, after Japan and China.
Moreover, during the meeting it was noted that ties between Italy and Korea date back to the sixteenth century and that in 1884 Italy was among the first European countries to sign a friendship, navigation and commerce treaty with them. Since then, relations have progressively strengthened and intensified. The foreign trade with this country, in 2008, reached 7.7 billion Euros, and Italy today is the fifth Korean trading partner among European countries
