Coming from Naples after the town of Vico Equense is Meta, which to the visitor eye is like a gateway opening on the Sorrento peninsula and the Amalfi Coast.
From its geographical peculiarity, according to the most accepted theory among local historians, derives the name Meta, which in ancient greek means "border". The small town still preserves almost intact its town planning structure dating back to the eighteenth-century, which is particularly noticeable in the area of the Casale, which winds wedged between the valley of la Rosella and the limestone ridge of Punta Scutolo. Ever since the Aragonese period the city was one of the hamlets of Piano di Sorrento with whom it shared its history and seafaring tradition, evidence of which are the precious votive offerings of various generations of sailors, kept over the centuries in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro.
Over the centuries Meta has also had many shipyards, active in the construction of wooden sailing ships.
The large Beach of Alimuri emphasizes Meta's relationship with the sea and today is a flourishing seaside resort. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the Garden of citrus fruits, a lovely nature area used also for theater events.
